Hello!
We had two very good shows, back to back, on Friday night, September 16, 2011, at Wendy’s in Westridge Shopping Center in Salinas, and on Saturday, September 17, 2011, at the Salinas Elk’s Lodge on Airport Blvd. in Salinas. The show at Wendy’s was the Graffiti Night which is part of our annual Nostalgia run. There were 100 cars at Wendy’s despite the weather being very cold. We sold lots of sweatshirts! There were 80 cars at the Salinas Elk’s Lodge, which was the Nostalgia Run. Our DJ, Don Murray, of Z97.9 did his usual outstanding performance in providing very good music from the 50s, and 60s at both events. There were awards, raffles, and good food. These were both very enjoyable events!
I would like to especially thank Mike Finlen Sr. for all the work he performed. It seemed he was everywhere doing something to further the events. He even pulled our trailer from place to place as needed. His son helped him as well. Thank you Mike and son!
A big thank you to all the Salinas Valley Street Rodder members who pitched in to make these two shows a resounding success! And a big thank you to the Castroville Midnighters and the Monterey Gold Coast Rods car clubs for their registration and appearance in our shows.
We were given the opportunity to represent our club at a poker stop during Cherries Jubilee. Our stop was the Chevron Station in Carmel Valley. Cecil Harrell and his granddaughter, Michelle Gleason and her friend, Brittany Hubbard, took the first shift and were joined by Stan and Nan Bayer. Mel Sinkler took the second shift and Stan and Nan Bayer stayed to help her as well. Margaret Martinez took the third shift and closed the stop about 3:30 PM. Thank you all so much for representing our club at that opportunity!
The last show of the year is a toy drive. It will be held November 5, 2011, 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM, at the Black Bear Diner on Laurel Drive at US 101 in Salinas. Registration fee is a new, unwrapped toy and/or nonperishable food. This will be presented to KSBW for distribution to needy families in the local area. Come on out and help us do a good job for the needy families in the local area.
We will be sponsoring two awards to be presented at the “Rods on the Wharf” show on November 11, 2011.
It is time to start thinking about the officers and board of directors for the coming year. I will be sending out nomination forms within the next week for you to indicate who you would like to nominate for the various positions. You can nominate yourself if you would like to run, or nominate someone you think will also do a good job. All the positions are available because they each have a one-year term. If the incumbents would like to keep their positions, they must nominate themselves again, or someone else can nominate them. The positions are:
Officers: President
Vice President
Secretary
Treasurer
Directors: There are nine directors
All primary members in good standing may be nominated to the Board of Directors. They can exercise all responsibilities, rights and benefits of SVSR membership, including admittance and participation in all club meetings, committees, events, jacket ownership, and eligibility to serve on the Board of Directors and voting privileges.
Associate members can exercise all responsibilities, rights and benefits of SVSR membership including admittance and participation in all club meetings, committees, events, jacket ownership, but are not eligible to serve on the Board of Directors or to vote.
I would like to be able to announce the new board at the Christmas Party, so the new board can hit the ground running.
More information regarding the Christmas Party will be forthcoming at a later time.
Should anyone have ideas they want to share please feel free to contact me, our Vice-President, Bob Urquides, or any board member.
My contact information: Disblu@pacbell.net or 831-320-3381.
Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 26, 2011, at the Black Bear Diner at 6:30 PM, (or come for no host dinner at 5:30 PM). Come out and participate!
